Inspirational Paralympic golden boy Jonathan Fox returned to the scene of his academic success to show off his medal and be quizzed by students.

The 21-year-old, who won gold in the 100m backstroke at London 2012, studied Sport BTEC National Award at Cornwall College in 2008.

Fresh from his incredible win, he was invited back as guest of honour to meet current sports students at the college's new Higher Education Centre in St Austell.

Russell Lawrance, director of A-levels and sport and public services at Cornwall College, paid tribute to the swimmer's abilities.

He said: "I think what Jon has achieved is inspirational and our students can relate to this as he is a local lad.

"Getting to the top in anything, not just sport, requires determination, courage and quite often a dollop or three of inspiration. The way we think, feel and behave makes up who we are as individuals and let's face it, none of us would get very far without a bit of determination every now and then.

"His performance has been inspirational and his conduct at all times exceptional."

During a question-and-answer session with students, Mr Fox faced an array of questions, including his plans for the future and whether he has any superstitions or rituals before a race.

Earlier in the day, he met the Mayor of St Austell, John Keast, and paid a visit to his former secondary school, where an assembly was held in his honour.

The swimmer then visited the White Water Centre in St Austell and the postbox in his home village of St Stephen that was painted gold when he triumphed at the Paralympics.
