Trago's £2m solar panel 'switch-on'

A major renewable energy project is set to come to fruition in Devon.

The official "switch on" of the £2 million solar panel scheme at Trago Mills' Newton Abbot store will take place today.

The project has been billed as Northern Europe's largest roof-mounted solar panel array.

It is the latest scheme to get under way as the Westcountry continues to lead the way on renewable energy.

Teignbridge Council leader, Councillor Jeremy Christophers, Trago Mills chairman Bruce Robertson and members of Devon Eco Energy who installed the panels are scheduled to attend the event in South Devon.

Solar energy is considered less controversial than wind energy. Last month a scientist campaigning against wind farms claimed large wind turbines in the region are being down-rated to run with less powerful generators to cash in on government subsidies.

Last year the South West was said to be at the forefront of a renewables "gold rush", with solar PV applications increasing by 600% from 2011, and applications arising as big as 224 acres – nearly six times the size of London's Olympic Stadium island.
