STEVE DOUBLE, a former Cornwall Council cabinet member, has been selected as the Conservative Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the Newquay and St Austell seat
St Austell born and bred, Mr Double will take on Liberal Democrat Steve Gilbert at the next election.
Mr Double was selected as PPC for the seat following a meeting of more than a 100 members and residents at Kingsley Village, Fraddon, last night.
He beat off competition from Lindsay Ward – a Tory councillor in South Hams – for the right to stand at the next election.
Mr Double, also a town councillor and current Deputy Mayor of St Austell, said: "I am incredibly honoured and delighted to have been selected as the next Parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party for St Austell and Newquay.
"I am very grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way."
He continued: "This area has been my home for my whole life and it is a place I love and care about.
"I now look forward to working with and for local people in the campaign for the next General Election."
And he had a warning shot for current MP Mr Gilbert: "I have had a Liberal as my MP since I was eight. It's time to change that."
